Automakers are increasingly applying for design patentsroughly 250% in at least one caseto restrict consumer access to basic functional parts, including headlamps, bumpers, and fenders. Not surprisingly, this means fewer options for affordable and safe replacement car parts and prices that can be up to 50 percent higher. Right to repair legislation, like the Save Money on Auto Repair Transportation (SMART) Act, would protect consumers’ right to repair their cars.

Repair Restrictions Hurt Consumers

Right to Repair means it is your right to choose where and how to repair your products, including your car. Auto manufacturers don’t agree and are using repair restrictions, such as design patent misuse, to drive up the cost of repairs and limit your access to safe and affordable aftermarket repair parts.

Tell Congress to Protect Your Right to Repair

The time to act is now. Americans have a right to choose the car parts they want, the right to access their vehicle’s data, and the right to have their car repaired at any locally-owned business of their choosing.

The SMART (H.R. 1707) and REPAIR (H.R. 906) Acts are two key bills to restore consumer choice and lower repair costs. Contact your members of Congress to voice your support.

The CAR Coalition is a growing group of independent automotive parts, management and repair companies, associations, and insurers committed to preserving consumer choice and affordable vehicle repair, by ensuring competition in the automotive collision parts industry.
